Common presentations, done safely

NZREX is not trying to catch you with rarities. It checks that a first-year doctor would be safe: the right history, the red flags, the sensible first plan.

The New Zealand setting

Community and hospital care in a system that expects clear, culturally safe communication. How you speak to the patient is part of what is being assessed.

Communication across the whole day

Explaining, negotiating, reassuring — in English, under time pressure, for fourteen stations straight. Fluency fades by afternoon unless it has been trained.

A long flight to a short exam

Most NZREX candidates travel to sit it. Arriving with the circuit already rehearsed is the cheapest insurance there is.

What OSCEY does for NZREX

A pass lasts five years. The preparation should outlast the flight home too.

  • The 17-slot circuit. 14 scored stations with 3 timed rests — the shape of the day, rehearsed until the pacing is automatic.
  • PGY1-level stations. Common presentations with safe first-line management — the standard a New Zealand first-year doctor is held to, not consultant-level theory.
  • Spoken English under pressure. Consultations that demand clear, structured speech for the whole circuit — the skill that fades by station twelve if you have only practised in your head.
  • A debrief that travels with you. Every station kept in your Case Codex with its transcript and domain breakdown, so the flight over can be revision, not panic.

The pathway, the level and the validity. The full FAQ covers the app itself.

What is NZREX Clinical?

The OSCE run by the Medical Council of New Zealand for international graduates who do not qualify through the comparable-health-system or competent-authority pathways. Passing it is one of the steps toward registration in a supervised first-year position.

What is the format of NZREX Clinical?

An OSCE circuit of 14 scored stations with 3 timed rest stations spaced through the day — 17 slots in total. Each station is timed, with reading time before you meet the patient. Confirm the current format with the Medical Council of New Zealand before your sitting.

What level is NZREX set at?

The level of a first-year doctor (PGY1) working in New Zealand: common presentations, safe management, clear communication and culturally safe practice.

How long is a NZREX pass valid for?

A NZREX pass is valid for five years for the purpose of applying for registration. Check the Medical Council of New Zealand's current policy, as rules can change.

How does OSCEY's NZREX circuit work?

OSCEY runs the 17-slot shape: 14 scored stations and 3 timed rests, each station with reading time and a timed consultation with a simulated patient, followed by a domain-by-domain debrief.

Does OSCEY cover New Zealand-specific scenarios?

The library covers the common presentations NZREX is built around — acute medicine, surgery, paediatrics, O&G, psychiatry and community care — with communication and culturally safe practice woven through the marking.

Does passing NZREX register me as a doctor?

Not by itself. A NZREX pass supports an application for registration in a supervised position; the Medical Council of New Zealand decides registration. OSCEY is a practice tool and plays no part in the decision.

Is OSCEY affiliated with the Medical Council of New Zealand?

No. OSCEY is an independent practice tool published by veridir. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by the Medical Council of New Zealand or any examining body.
